The Five Alive Format
Five Alive is a competition management method for more than 8 athletes. A rolling group of 5 active athletes jump at all times. When someone clears or is eliminated, the next athlete from the wait list rotates in.
Two Events
This app manages Girls High Jump and Boys High Jump as separate events. Use the tabs at the top to switch between them. Each has its own athletes, heights, rotation, and results.
The Calling Order
UP β on the runway, about to jump
DECK β next up, approaching
HOLE / HOLD / 5TH β on standby with poles ready
Getting Started
You have two options:
Import PDF: Upload the meet program to auto-populate athlete rosters
Create Events Manually: Select which events (Girls, Boys, or Both) and add athletes one by one
Bar Heights Setup
Whether you imported or created events manually, set up the bar heights for your meet:
Starting Height β first bar height to jump
Increment β how much to raise after each height
Pre-load Count β how many heights to prepare in advance
π‘ Heights are preserved per event (girls and boys can have different starting heights)
Adding / Managing Athletes
Tap π₯ Manage Athletes to view the full athlete list. From there:
Tap + Add Athlete to add new athletes one at a time or in bulk
Tap π Reset Athletes to clear all athletes and start over (useful if the PDF imported the wrong names)
The Check-In Screen
Before starting competition, athletes check in with the official. Tap any athlete card to check them in and record their declared starting height.
The starting height dropdown shows your pre-loaded heights
Leave starting height blank to enter at the first height
Tap β Check In All to check in every athlete at once, or β Uncheck All to reset
π‘ Use the search box to quickly find an athlete by name or school when they walk up.
Present & Active toggle
The check-in modal includes a Present & Active toggle (on by default). Turn it off when an athlete has checked in for the competition but is temporarily not on the infield β for example, still warming up or running another event.
The athlete is registered and their starting height is recorded
Their card shows an orange CO badge on the check-in screen
When competition starts they appear in the Checked Out list, not the rotation
Check them back in from the Checked Out panel when they arrive at the pit
π‘ Athletes marked Not Competing (via the red button) are excluded entirely β use that for DNS. The Checked Out toggle is for athletes who plan to compete but aren't present yet.
Adding Athletes During Check-In
If an athlete arrives who's not on the roster, tap + Add Athlete to add them on the spot.
Starting Competition
Tap βΆ Start Competition when check-in is complete. Only checked-in athletes enter the rotation (checked-out athletes wait in the Checked Out list until they return).
Recording Jumps
β Make β cleared. Athlete moves to next height, new athlete rotates in.
β Miss β knocked bar. After 3 misses, eliminated.
β Pass β skips this height. Any misses carry forward as amber β dots at next height.
Select an increment chip and tap Raise Bar. When only checked-out athletes remain, a yellow β Height Complete banner appears β you decide when to raise.
π‘ Checked-out athletes automatically re-enter the rotation at the next height.
Ending the Competition
When all athletes finish, a red π Competition Complete banner appears and the End button pulses. Tap to finalize.
Exports
PDF β printable formatted results sheet
CSV β Hy-Tek compatible import file
View the scoresheet at any time via π Scoresheet in the header β a Back button returns you to the active competition.
Automatic Data Saving
Five Alive automatically saves all your meet data to the browser β including athlete rosters, jump records, bar heights, and competition state. This protects your data in case of:
Loss of cell service
Accidental phone shutdown or app crash
Browser refresh or accidental navigation
πΎ Your data is saved locally on this device and never uploaded anywhere.
Data Retention
Saved meet data persists for 30 days. This gives you time to finish the competition and make any corrections. After 30 days, the data is automatically cleared.
Running Multiple Meets
If you're an official running meets every week, you'll need to clear the old meet's data before starting a new one. Otherwise, the app will load your previous meet's data (athletes, heights, jump records, etc.) when you open it.
Clearing Data
When you're done with a meet and ready to start fresh for the next one, use the π Clear All Data button at the bottom of this help screen.
This completely resets the app and erases:
All imported athletes from both events
All jump records and competition data
Meet name and date
Bar height settings and saved state
After clearing, you'll be ready to import the next meet's PDF from scratch.
